STAR National Programs

Michigan

The Flint STAR program is based in Flint, Michigan and the surrounding Genesee County area. This area faces the same crisis seen at the national level - students of color, particularly male students are falling behind their peers and there is a dire shortage of male teachers of color. Flint STAR StudentsThe local community school districts in Flint and Genesee County are also facing other challenges affecting students of color, such as high suspension rate of students, a high dropout rate of students, particularly among African American students, and declining enrollment of students.

The Flint STAR program addresses the need to get more leaders into the classroom from underrepresented groups, particularly African American men. To address this need, Baker College of Flint, Mott Community College, and the University of Michigan-Flint have entered into a partnership with the Phelps Stokes Fund and are using national STAR resources to create a model which is specifically tailored for STAR participants in the Michigan pilot area. The STAR participants are underrepresented students who are pursuing their teaching certification degree at the three educational institutions which service Flint and the surrounding community.
